How much does tile installation cost per square foot?

In the Dallas area, tile labor typically runs $7 to $14 per square foot, with most standard residential jobs around $10. Materials add another $3 to $15+ depending on the tile. A few things move the number:

• Tile size and type: standard ceramic and porcelain set fastest; large-format porcelain, natural stone, and small mosaic all cost more in labor.
• Pattern: a straight lay is quickest; herringbone, chevron, and diagonal layouts need more cuts and more time.
• Prep: an out-of-flat substrate or old tile removal adds labor before setting even starts.
• Scope: a small repair or single-wall job starts low; whole floors and showers scale up.

What makes a good tile installation?

Most tile problems aren't the tile — they're the prep and the setting. A flat substrate keeps large tiles from lippage (uneven edges that catch your eye and your toe). Proper layout means the cut pieces land in the right places instead of a sliver next to the door. Correct thinset and back-buttering keep tiles from coming loose. And in wet areas, waterproofing under the tile is what makes it last. Nobody ever compliments the substrate. But the substrate is why the tile still looks right in ten years — so we get the boring part perfect.

How long does a tile job take?

A standard bathroom tile job typically takes about three to five days of setting time — a day for prep and waterproofing, one to two for setting, and one to two for grout and finish — plus 24 to 72 hours of cure before the space is fully usable. Larger floors and detailed patterns take longer. We'll give you a realistic timeline at the estimate.
