How much does hardwood flooring cost to install?
Most hardwood installs in North DFW run $8 to $18 per square foot installed. What moves the number:
- Solid vs. engineered: solid wood on a slab needs a plywood layer first — that adds $2 to $4 per square foot before the floor even starts. Engineered skips it.
- Species and grade: red and white oak are the workhorses ($5–$10/sq ft material); hickory, walnut, and exotics climb fast. Cleaner grades cost more than rustic.
- Plank width: wide planks cost more per square foot than standard strips.
- Prep: slab moisture testing, leveling, and old-floor removal add labor.
